At Texas Grins, we believe in the power of technology to improve patient care. We stay on top of the newest innovations, and invest in those machines that provide a better, less-invasive experience. Our Galileos 3D CBCT imaging offers better and more detailed pictures than ever before. With this state-of-the-art machine guiding our hand, we are able to perform your procedure in less time with less pain and even save you money!
An important part of making you feel comfortable during your oral surgery (or any procedure) at Texas Grins is the knowledge that you are in good hands. Our staff is second to none. We combine professionalism and experience with a caring touch that will make you feel like yes, you are in the right place.
To make your procedure pain-free, Dr. Crain offers local anesthesia and two types of dental sedation. Nitrous oxide is a safe, fast-acting gas that’s administered through a face mask. Once the mask is removed, nitrous’s effects fade quickly. Oral sedation is a pill that you take before your appointment. It takes longer to kick in, but it is stronger than nitrous.
There are many reasons you may have to have a tooth pulled, including:
A tooth that is very badly damaged due to decay and can’t be saved with a crown or similar restoration will need to be taken out.
Gum disease is the most common cause of tooth loss. If your teeth have become extremely loose due to periodontitis, they may need to be removed.
Trauma may cause your tooth to be cracked or broken beyond repair.
If your teeth are overcrowded, extraction may be called for in order to allow for the correct alignment of remaining teeth. It’s not uncommon for teeth to be taken out in preparation for braces.
An abscess, or infection of the tooth pulp, is typically treated with a root canal. But in some cases, the root canal is not effective and the tooth must be extracted.
People undergoing certain medical procedures that compromise the immune system, like chemotherapy or an organ transplant, may need to have teeth removed that are at risk for infection.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Your wisdom teeth are a set of molars that typically emerge in early adulthood. They are often removed if X-rays show they are likely to cause problems. Removal may be warranted if:
- They are at risk of pushing against other teeth, potentially damaging them.
- They have failed to come in completely. They may be covered by a piece of gum. Food may get trapped under the gum and cause infection.
- They are impacted, or prevented from coming in by other teeth or bone.
- They are likely to move your other teeth out of alignment.
Ridge augmentation is a procedure that’s typically performed after tooth loss. We prevent bone deformity by placing bonelike material into the jawbone to stimulate growth (bone graft). This rebuilds the contours of the jaw and gumline. We may perform a ridge augmentation for cosmetic reasons, and to build up the jawbone for dental implant placement.
A sinus lift is a grafting technique that adds bone to the upper jaw. In order for this to happen, the sinus membrane must be lifted upward. After tooth loss, there may not be enough bone mass in the upper jaw for dental implants to be placed. The sinus lift procedure builds up the jawbone, allowing for the placement of dental implants several months later.
After your oral surgery, it’s very important to follow the post-operative instructions given to you by Dr. Crain or another member of the Texas Grins team. Take any prescribed medications as directed. You may use ice packs on the side of your cheek to help with bleeding. Be sure to get plenty of rest.
