3 Big Advantages of Same-Day Crowns
A dental crown is one of the most versatile treatments used in dentistry. At Texas Grins in Willow Park, we use dental crowns to fix damaged teeth or correct cosmetic issues. You might have a crown in your mouth, or know the restoration by it’s other name, a “cap.”
Either way, crowns have been used in dentistry for hundreds of years. The materials have evolved to where we can now create lifelike dental crowns that function great and last for years. At Texas Grins, we take this one step further by providing same-day crowns. These crowns are made from all-ceramic material and can be created and placed permanently in your mouth for about 90 minutes.
1. CEREC crowns save you time
Placing a crown is a multi-step process. The dental professionals must 1.) Prepare the damaged tooth. 2. Take an impression. 3.) Design the crown. 4.) Fabricate the crown. 5.) Place the permanent crown. Most dental offices spread out these steps over two to three dental visits. You’ll visit the office multiple times because most dentists need to send your impression to a special lab that will fabricate the crown. With CEREC same-day crowns, we can do all of these steps in one visit. The CEREC system has built-in digital technology and special milling station. In fact, you can watch the crown being designed right before your very eyes.
2. Same-day crowns eliminate need for temporary crowns.
We dentists have to prepare the tooth (remove a portion of the enamel) to get an accurate impression. Once the tooth is prepared, we need to restore it. Because most dentists use outside dental labs for their restorations, they often use a temporary crown while the permanent crown is being designed. That can usually take anywhere from two to six weeks. A temporary is often made from acrylic material. The big problem with temporary crowns is that the crowns aren’t as lifelike as natural teeth can sometimes dislodge. Having a crown dislodge can be a major hassle. No one wants to worry about losing a crown during a meal or after office hours. Additionally, temporary crowns are often smaller in size than permanent crowns and can cause pain and sensitivity.
3. CEREC crowns are precise.
We use advanced technology at Texas Grins to make sure we are giving you a beautiful and functional smile. We love using CEREC same-day crowns because of the digital material, the CAD/CAM technology and in-office milling station. We take a digital scan of the tooth and then send the scan to the milling machine. There are no goopy materials and less risk of human error. With a non-CEREC crown, a lab technician will craft a crown based on the impression. A bad impression can mean a poor fit. If a crowns doesn’t fit well, it may not last as long. The digital scan can help us achieve the perfect-fitting crown.
Restore your smile in one visit
A CEREC crown can be placed before you go to work or even during your lunch break. You can sit in the office and enjoy a book, movie, or catch up on work while your crown is being designed.
