A Hollywood History
It’s perhaps not so surprising that dental veneers are practically synonymous with Hollywood glamour, considering their star-studded history.
The first veneers were created in the late 1920s or early 1930s by a California dentist, Charles Pincus. In those days, many movie stars had teeth that were damaged, decayed, crooked, and just not Hollywood-worthy. So Dr. Pincus created the first veneers in order to make their teeth look flawless on the screen.
Have you noticed that child actress Shirley Temple never seemed to have teeth missing despite her age? Well, she in fact did lose her baby teeth like any other child. But thanks to the magic of Dr. Pincus’s veneers, you would never know it by her photographs or movies!
These first veneers were surely rougher and not as lifelike as today’s versions. After all, they were meant to be seen on the screen and in pictures only — not in real life. Plus they were temporary, designed to last just through filming.
It wasn’t until the early 1980s that improvements in technology enabled the development of permanent veneers and made the procedure practical for the general public. Today’s veneers, with proper care, can last anywhere from ten to thirty years.
What Will Veneers Do for Me?
A dental veneer is an extremely thin, shell-like covering or facade that goes over the front of the tooth. The veneers at Texas Grins are meticulously matched to your natural tooth color and crafted out of durable porcelain. They look and reflect light just like real teeth. With just this one procedure, you can hide a host of dental blemishes and flaws.
- Teeth that are stained or dingy — even if resistant to chemical whitening treatments (for example, discoloration due to antibiotics, root canal treatment, or decay).
- Teeth that are uneven at the edges or worn down.
- Teeth that have small cosmetic chips, breaks, or cracks.
- Teeth that are uneven or have minor alignment issues.
- Teeth with gaps between them that you’d like to close.
The Veneers Process
So you’ve decided you’re ready to get the dazzling smile that you deserve. What do you do now?
First of all, schedule a consultation with Dr. Crain of Texas Grins Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry. At your appointment, Dr. Crain will thoroughly examine your teeth and mouth to determine if you are a good candidate for dental veneers. You will discuss what you want your smile to look like, how many veneers you need or want, and the doctor will thoroughly answer any questions and concerns you have. If you want, you can bring in photographs of people whose smiles you admire to give us an idea of what you hope to achieve.
We will take a series of images and impressions in order to create a mold of your teeth. Your porcelain veneers will then be custom crafted by an outside lab.
Once your beautiful veneers are in our office, we will have you come back for a second appointment. A very thin layer of tooth enamel will be removed so your teeth can accommodate the veneers. Dr. Crain will place them on the teeth with a special, light-cured adhesive.
Once the veneers have been bonded, the doctor will shape and smooth them so they are comfortable in your mouth and look their very best.
After any necessary adjustments, you will walk out the door with a stunning new smile.
The process is done using local anesthesia, making it painless, and will generally take anywhere from one to a few hours (depending on how many teeth you are having covered).
