What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are small posts made of titanium or other biocompatible metal that when inserted into the gum replace the roots of missing teeth. These artificial roots have been around more than 50 years and have completely changed the way people think about teeth replacement.
When you lose a tooth, you’re losing both the visible crown and the tooth root. Other teeth replacement solutions simply replace the visible parts of missing teeth. But dental implants make it possible to replace the missing roots. The result is a prosthetic that’s incredibly lifelike.
In fact, when you replace a single missing tooth with a dental crown (or single-tooth prosthetic) and a dental implant, it’s as close as you can get to a brand new tooth!
What Is The Procedure For Getting Dental Implants?
When you come to Texas Grins for a dental implant consultation, we’ll review your dental and medical histories to help determine whether dental implants are right for you. Then, if it looks like it’s a great fit, we’ll move forward with the placement.
During the placement of your dental implants, we’ll use state-of-the-art Galileos 3D CBCT imaging equipment to insert the prosthetic tooth roots into your gums with precision and comfort.
In some cases, we can restore your dental implant the same day you have it placed. You can walk into our office with a gap in your smile and in a matter of hours, you’ll have a beautifully restore grin!
This is possible because we’ve invested in CEREC same-day dental crown technology, which can fabricate a dental restoration to your exact specifications in just minutes!
If we can’t restore your dental implant on the same day it’s placed, we’ll give your dental implant a little bit of time to heal. During this period, your jaw bone will actually heal around the dental implant, holding onto it tightly, just as it would a natural tooth root.
After the healing period is over, you’ll come in, and we’ll top your dental implant with a custom abutment (or connector) and dental restoration.
Can Dental Implants Help Me If I’m Missing All My Teeth?
Yes! At Texas Grins, we’re proud to offer a few different dental implant solutions for those who are missing all their teeth but are turned off by the idea of traditional dentures.
Hypothetically speaking, you could replace every missing tooth with a dental implant restored with a dental crown. But that would be time-consuming, expensive, and require an extensive recovery period. It might also be impossible to do without a bone graft.
Fortunately, Dr. Crain is able to anchor an entire upper or lower set of artificial teeth to as few as four dental implants! It’s a more comfortable and cost-effective way to experience the benefits of dental implants without excessive chair time. To do this, Dr. Crain places two dental implants vertically at the front of the mouth. Then, he places two at angles in the back of the mouth.
You’ll feel confident that your artificial teeth are exactly where they’re supposed to be because only your dentist will be able to remove them.
If you’re looking for a prosthetic you can remove yourself, you might want to consider dental implant dentures.
There are a couple different kinds, but both use just two dental implants to anchor a denture that you can remove for regular cleanings. They’re like traditional dentures but with the added security of using dental implants instead of adhesive to hold the prosthetic in place. It’s like you’re getting the best of both worlds!
